Email I Received from the AKC on 9/12/06.
Thank you for your inquiry and interest in the American Kennel Club.
AKC does not go out and solicit breeds to come join us; there has to be a formal US club that is interested in pursuing acceptance of a breed to contact us and request consideration.
We did have an inquiry from the United States American Bulldog Club back in September of 2004 requesting acceptance of the breed into the AKC Foundation Stock Service program. Their petition was suspended in order
for the club to work on several questions that the FSS Committee had regarding the breed. To date we have not received any additional information; they may still be in the process of working on questions we had, or, may have decided not to pursue it.
In addition, research conducted on this breed indicates that although the breed's origins reach back to the 1700 - 1800's, formal pedigrees were not kept on dogs until the early 1970s. Given that this breed's past cannot be traced back prior to this point, the American Kennel Club would consider this breed a "work in progress", and therefore would not be eligible for consideration to be accepted into the Foundation Stock Service program at this time. We would like to see a breed in existence for at least 40 - 50 years with rigid documentation of a breed club registry with accurate pedigrees over several decades before a breed would be considered for FSS. Also,
there is a wide variety of styles and breed type that is allowable, and given the scope of this diversity indicates that the American Bulldog is still "a work in progress".
