Looking for an affectionate older gal who just wants some love? Then Tala is the Aussie for you! This petite girl was found wandering in upstate South Carolina, starving and emaciated and appearing to have just weaned a litter of puppies. After no owner turned up, Tala found herself at the pound. The vet determined her to be 8-9 years old, and she is heartworm positive, poor girl! She is way too old and sweet to have been running around, popping out puppies and starving.
Tala still has a lot of spunk, though, and is probably not for a family with young children and lacking in Aussie experience. She doesn’t like to be pushed around, and who can blame her? This old girl will need someone with a patient, loving hand who will take the time to figure out what she needs and what she is accustomed to.
Tala is good in her crate, and is learning that she has to go there for her breakfast and dinner. We are also working on some simple commands, and you know they say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but we’re confident that over time she will figure it out. She is great on a leash, and aside from attempting to jump up (she can’t always get enough bounce!), she is very well mannered with strangers. Tala doesn’t mind cats, and while she is curious about the little kitten in the house now, she is only curious, and certainly not aggressive. She would go well in a home with another quiet, male dog, but probably not with a dominant female. She has been fine with her foster-siblings, but has shown some signs of being a little dominant, or it could have just been her herding/motherly side - she was very “dogging” of one of the younger female puppies in the household for a few days.
As mentioned before, Tala is heartworm positive and will not be ready for her new home for a few months. However, if you think Tala might be the old girl for you, fill out an application and feel free to ask some questions. We are still learning Tala’s quirks, as she has only been in care for a few weeks, but she will certainly be a great dog for a patient, loving family.
